As part of this work, the chemical composition of surface waters and bottom sediments is being studied. This allows experts to assess the potential pollution risks associated with waste from mining and industrial enterprises located upstream, as well as other sources of pollution.

"For several years, we have been supporting our national partners in monitoring water quality and pollution levels in the Syrdarya River basin," said Ambassador Antti Karttunen, OSCE Project Coordinator in Uzbekistan. - Water and natural resources do not know national borders. Our national partners work closely with colleagues from neighboring countries and share data obtained through OSCE-supported monitoring. This helps to increase transparency and helps to find solutions to common environmental problems.

According to Zafar Kayumov, First Deputy Head of the National Environmental Monitoring Center, long-term cooperation with the OSCE has contributed to strengthening national capacities in the field of environmental analysis. The results obtained serve as a scientifically sound basis for monitoring pollution trends, assessing potential risks to the population and ecosystems, and making decisions in the field of environmental protection.

By continuing to support water quality monitoring and cross-border data exchange, the OSCE Project Coordinator in Uzbekistan helps national partners identify emerging environmental risks in a timely manner, promotes sustainable management of shared water resources, thereby contributing to strengthening environmental security.
