According
to reports, the facility operator, Kansai
Electric Power Company (KEPCO), was forced to manually shut down the
reactor due to the incident. There have been no reports of injuries, and the
steam leak has had no environmental impact. No changes in radiation levels have
been recorded. The company is currently conducting an investigation to
determine the cause of the incident.
The Mihama
Nuclear Power Plant is situated on the coast of the Sea of Japan on Honshu Island, approximately 320
kilometers west of Tokyo. Construction of the plant began in 1967, featuring
three Pressurized Water Reactors (PWR)
with capacities of 340 MW, 500 MW, and 826 MW, respectively.
Units 1
and 2 were decommissioned in 2015 due to concerns over potential accidents.
Unit 3 was temporarily suspended but restarted in 2021 following upgrades to
its safety systems. Since September 2022, this unit has been operating
normally, as reported by report.az.
